Our family used fennel and anise freely as seasonings in their baking and other cookery. This is similar to the Brown Sugar Cookies, yet quite different with the white sugar and anise seed. The two kinds of cookies together are very attractive on a serving plate.

Anise Ice Box Cookies

1/2 c butter or margarine
1 c sugar
1 egg
1 and 3/4 flour
salt if desired
1 and 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 T crushed anise seed
1/2 c finely chopped nuts (optional)

1. Cream butter with sugar until fluffly.
2. Beat in egg.
3. Sift dry ingredients together and gradually work into mix.
4. Shape the dough into 3 or 4 rolls and wrap in waxed paper. Chill.
5. Slice thin.

Bake at 400° for about 10 minutes. Watch carefully.
