I guess I could have called these "Old-fashioned Brownies," too. This is an old recipe from my recipe box, a before-cake-mixes brownie recipe. It's the kind of brownies I remember from years ago. They are a little chewy, more fudge-like, than today's cake-like brownies. My mother always put nuts in her brownies, but not English walnuts. Around our house, they were black walnuts, cracked and picked by ourselves.

Basic Brownies

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 9x13 cake pan.

1 c (2 sticks) butter or margarine (melted)
2 c sugar
2 tsp vanilla
4 eggs
3/4 c to a c of cocoa powder
1 c flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 c chopped nuts, optional

1. Add sugar and vanilla to melted butter.
2. Add eggs, beating after each egg.
3. Add cocoa. Beat until well mixed.
4. Add flour and baking powder, and beat well.
5. Pour into baking pan.

Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until brownies pull away from the side of the pan.

Cool, cut into squares.
