Mrs. Lucille McDowell came to our house every day and took care of pre-school Amy and Lisa while I was at work. She baked cookies, made applesauce, and generally made herself at home in the kitchen. It was great! This is her recipe for Bird's Nests. I have it on a recipe card in my writing, then Mrs. McDowell added things I forgot in her handwriting.

Bird's Nest Cookies

1/2 c brown sugar
1 c butter
2 c flour
2 beaten egg yolks (save the whites in another dish)
1 c chopped walnuts

raspberry jam

1. Cream the sugar and butter.
2. Beat in the two egg yolks.
3. Add the flour and mix.
4. Roll dough into balls. Dip into unbeaten eggwhites, and roll in the chopped nuts.

Place on greased cookie sheets.

Bake at 300° for five minutes.

Remove from oven. Press a thumb print in the center of each cookie, and fill the depression with raspberry jam.

Return to oven and bake 20 minutes longer.
