My parents made this cookie at Christmas. Our house was like a bakery and candy factory before the holidays. I continued the tradition. These very versatile cookies were one of my favorites. I like them best made into the roll and sliced. Of course, they are good any time, not just for the holidays.

Brown Sugar Cookie

1/2 c butter
1 c brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 c. chopped walnuts (black walnuts, if you have them)
salt if desired

1. Cream sugar and butter.
2. Beat in egg and vanilla.
3. Add dry ingredients.

Bake at 350° on greased cookie sheet.

Variation 1 : Roll to 1/8 inch thick, and cut into shapes.
Variation 2: Add 3 T milk, and drop by teaspoon.
Variation 3: Shape into rolls and chill overnight. Slice, and bake.
Variation 4: Add 2 squares melted chocolate.
Variation 5: Add 2 tsp cinnamon, 1/2 tsp nutmeg or cloves.
