When I got married, years ago, my close friend's mother, Lucile Ranger, gave me a shower gift of a selection of her recipes, all hand written on index cards. I've treasured them ever since. My mother used to make this traditional brown bread baked in a can, but I don't have her recipe. We only lived a block or so apart. Maybe my mom used Mrs. Ranger's recipe.

Mrs. Ranger's Brown Bread

Boil together for 5 minutes, then cool:
1 and 1/2 c raisins
1 and 1/2 c water

Cream together:
1 c sugar
1 T butter
1 egg

Sift together:
2 and 3/4 c flour
2 t soda
1/2 tsp salt

Also:
1 T vanilla
1/2 c nuts

1. Add flour mix to creamed mix.
2. Stir in raisins and water, the vanilla and nuts.
3. Fill well-greased round "tin" cans half full.

Bake at 350° one hour. After baking, let stand few minutes before removing from cans.

When cool, wrap in waxed paper.
