In reading through various recipe books, there are claims that Chess Pie is a Southern pie. Not entirely so. It was popular in Michigan when I was growing up. I see that there are both vanilla and chocolate chess pies. I only knew of chocolate, with walnuts, like my recipe here.

Chess Pie

1 9 inch single crust

1 and 1/2 cups white sugar
3 and 1/2 T cocoa
1/2 c butter, melted
5 oz evaporated milk
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp vanilla extract
3/4 cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 400 °

1. Mix together sugar, cocoa, and melted butter.
2. Stir in evaporated milk, beaten eggs, vanilla, and chopped walnuts.
3. Pour nut mixture into unbaked pie shell.

Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325 ° and bake for 30 minutes. If crust edges begin to brown too much, cover them with aluminum foil.
