This is one of my husband's favorite cookies. The index card in my recipe box shows the original recipe in my handwriting. Then next to my ingredient amounts, another amount is written in. They were added by Lucille McDowell, who came to our house to take care of our daughters while we worked. Her recipe is double of mine. I have sorted it all out and put each recipe here separately.

Date Pinwheels (Ruth's Recipe)

Filling:

1 lb chopped dates
1/2 c water
1/2 c sugar

Combine the above. Cook two or three minutes, until thick. Cool.

1 c chopped nuts. Add to cooled filling.

Cookie dough:

1//2 c butter
1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 c granulated sugar
1 beaten egg
1/2 t vanilla
2 c flour
1/2 t soda


1. Cream butter and sugars.
2. Beat in egg.
3. Mix in the rest of the ingredients.
4. Chill.

5. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thick.
6. Spread filling on dough.
7. Roll up like a cinnamon roll.
8. Chill thoroughly.

9. Slice the roll into cookies.

Bake at 350° on greased cookie sheet.
