This is how my mother made cole slaw. Always with apples and celery seed, always thinned mayo for dressing. Only Mom thinned her mayo with pickle juice. I used white vinegar.  I remembered Mom’s slaw when I had to take cole slaw to a potluck a while back, so I put this slaw together.

Ruth's Fruity Cole Slaw

1 small head cabbage, chopped fine
grated carrots to taste
1/2 tsp celery seed
1 eating apple, chopped, with skin on
1/2 c dried cranberries
1/4 c chopped nuts
1/3 c mayonnaise thinned with white vinegar

1. Mix cabbage, apples, and dressing together.
2. Top with dried cranberries and nuts.
