Jane Arndt, my teaching and travel friend of many years, has been making this cake for many years. I finally got around to asking her for the recipe.
Turtle Cake
1 box chocolate cake mix (dark)
1 stick oleo (1/2 c)
1 14-oz pkg of caramels
1 can Eagle Brand evaporated milk
chocolate chips
chopped nuts
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
Grease a 9x13 pan
1. Mix the cake batter according to directions on the box.
2. Pour half the batter into the 9x13 pan, and bake for 15 minutes
3. Heat together the oleo, caramels, evaporated milk, until melted.
4. Pour the above mixture over the baked cake.
5. Cover the caramel mix with the rest of the unbaked batter.
6. Sprinkle with chocolate chips and chopped nuts to taste.
Bake for 25 minutes (or more) until cake pulls away from the sides of the pan.
